The Seedstars competition, which aims to find the best startup across 52 emerging markets, held its South Africa finals at the Standard Bank incubator in Johannesburg on 17th July. Giraffe was one of 12 tech startups from across the country to pitch in the finals, and managed to take first place at the event.
Judges felt that Giraffe combined the aspects ideal for effective scalability in emerging markets that can also add value to established business practices. “It was an exciting event where we recognised amazing start-ups in South Africa. Standard Bank has seen the need to recognise the start-up community as well as accessing innovative companies that can improve our value chain as well as our corporate client base,” said judge Jayshree Naidoo, head of the Standard Bank incubator, which is also a sponsor of the competition.
Giraffe now proceeds to the global final competition to be held in Geneva in early 2016. The company, which launched its free recruitment agency service in Johannesburg in Jan 2015, has seen considerable traction over the past five months. Nearly 25 thousand jobseekers have registered for the service, and over 3,000 of them have received job opportunities by SMS.
One of the key reasons for Giraffe’s growth is its simplicity and automation. Jobseekers can register for free using their cellphone to make a simple CV. Businesses can recruit medium-skilled staff- across a range of positions, including retail, call centre, admin and industrial– by submitting a simple online form at www.giraffe.co.za. Giraffe’s matching algorithm then identifies suitable candidates, contacts them by SMS and schedules interviews at a time and location of the employers’ choice.
Giraffe is currently offering free recruitment services to businesses in Johannesburg, and plans to expand to the rest of South Africa in late 2015.
